How stamped concrete is made
- The slab is poured and leveled like any other.
- Color can be mixed into the concrete, spread on the surface, or both.
- A release agent goes down so the mats don't stick, often in a second color that settles into the grooves.
- While the concrete is still workable, the crew presses the pattern mats in, section by section. Timing is everything, which is why stamping takes an experienced crew.
- Joints are cut along the pattern lines, the surface is washed, and a sealer goes on once it has cured.
Stamped concrete patterns
- Ashlar slate: rectangles and squares like cut stone. The most common patio pattern.
- Random stone and flagstone: irregular shapes for a natural look.
- Brick and cobblestone: for borders, walkways and driveway edges.
- Wood plank: the look of a deck, without boards to rot or stain.
A plain center with a stamped border is a popular way to get the look for less.
Caring for stamped concrete
- Reseal as it needs it. HomeGuide puts it at every 2 to 3 years. The American Society of Concrete Contractors says sunny, busy areas need new sealer every 2 to 3 years and lighter-use areas every 4 to 5, and warns that sealing every year causes buildup.
- Clean gently. A broom, a hose and mild soap do most of the work.
- Keep de-icers off it in the first winter. The National Ready Mixed Concrete Association advises against de-icing chemicals in a slab's first winter, and moderate use after that.
- Ask for grip. A slip-resistant additive in the sealer helps on pool decks and steps.
Stamped concrete or pavers?
HomeGuide's patio guide (July 2025) puts paver patios at $10 to $30 per square foot, lasting 25 to 75 years, and stained or stamped concrete patios at $8 to $30, lasting 30 to 50 years. Pavers are separate pieces on sand: easy to lift and relay, with more joints to keep clean. Stamped concrete is one slab: fewer weeds, a smoother surface, and a reseal every few years.
