Concrete cost calculator
Measure the length and width in feet. For an L-shape, measure it as two rectangles and add them up. The calculator uses HomeGuide's national ranges from the table below.
Enter the length and width in feet to see a price range.
A rough range only. The real price comes from a quote after someone has seen the ground.

What changes the price of concrete work
- Square footage. The biggest factor. Larger areas cost more in total but usually less per square foot.
- Removal. Breaking out and hauling away an old driveway or patio is extra, and thicker or reinforced old concrete takes longer.
- Base work. Grading, digging out soft spots, adding and compacting base material (the crushed stone under the slab). Wet, clayey or uneven ground adds work.
- Thickness and reinforcement. 4 inches for cars and pickups; 5 to 6 inches for light trucks (Virginia Ready Mixed Concrete Association), plus rebar, wire or fibers.
- Finish. Broom finish costs least; exposed aggregate (a surface that shows the small stones) and color more; stamped patterns the most.
- Shape and grade. Curves, steps and slopes take more work to set up and pour than a flat rectangle.
- Access. When the truck can't reach the pour, the concrete is pumped or wheeled in, which adds cost.
- Permits. Work on the driveway approach or curb needs the City of Huntsville's Driveway Curb Cut Permit; see the permits guide.
What a written concrete quote should list
- The area in square feet and the thickness.
- Removal and haul-away of the old surface, if any.
- Base preparation: grading, base material, compaction.
- Reinforcement, and the joint spacing (how far apart the crack-control grooves are).
- The finish, the color and the sealer, if any.
- Permits, if the job needs any, and who gets them.
- Cleanup, payment schedule and start date.
Ways to lower the cost of concrete work
- Keep the shape simple: rectangles cost less to shape than curves.
- Choose a plain broom finish with a stamped or colored border instead of stamping the whole area.
- Combine small jobs, like a walkway, a pad and steps, into one pour.
- Clear the area and make room for the truck to get close.
- Get two or three written quotes for the same work, so you can compare them fairly.
